Selon la légende, Iztaccíhuatl, une princesse, et Popocatépetl, un vaillant guerrier, s’aimaient profondément. Leur histoire se termine tragiquement : croyant son bien-aimé mort au combat, Iztaccíhuatl succombe de chagrin. À son retour, découvrant son amour sans vie, Popocatépetl l’emporte dans les montagnes, espérant la ranimer.
