According to the myth, Iztaccíhuatl, a princess, died of grief believing her warrior had fallen in battle. Upon his return, Popocatépetl stood watch over her grave until the gods transformed them into twin volcanoes, united forever. Today, his fiery heart is said to burn beneath the snow, an eternal flame of devotion.
